WEEKLY BIBLE READING:
1 Corinthians 15:52-55
[52]In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
[53]For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
[54]So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
[55]O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
INTERPRETATION
Jesus made a bold and transformative statement in John 11:25, declaring, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” These words, spoken at the tomb of Lazarus, weren’t just words of comfort — they were a revelation of divine power and eternal hope. In this declaration, Jesus established Himself not just as one who gives life, but as Life itself, and not just one who raises the dead, but as Resurrection in the flesh.
The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith. Without it, the cross would be a tragedy and the gospel a false hope. Paul emphasized in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” But praise God, He is risen!
Jesus’ triumph over the grave is our assurance that death no longer has the final say. “Death has been swallowed up in victory… thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:54, 57). When we believe in Christ, we are spiritually raised from the dead. Our old selves are buried, and we rise anew in His resurrection power (Romans 6:4-5).
Eternal Life Begins Now
When Jesus said, “Whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (John 11:26), He was speaking of eternal life, not just life after death, but life that begins the moment we believe. Eternal life isn’t simply a ticket to heaven; it’s a restored relationship with God, a present and active communion with the One who is Life itself (John 17:3).
This life cannot be touched by physical death. Though our bodies may perish, our spirits live on in Christ. For the believer, death is no longer a door into darkness, but a passage into deeper glory.
Living in Resurrection Power
To believe in the resurrection is not merely to await a future hope but to walk in resurrection power daily. Paul prayed that believers would know “His incomparably great power for us who believe… the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead” (Ephesians 1:19-20). That power is available to overcome sin, to rise from despair, and to live victoriously in Christ.
We do not need to live defeated. We do not need to live afraid. Because He lives, we can face tomorrow. Because He rose, we can rise too — from sin, from fear, from shame.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.
We are grateful, dear Father, for another season of deep reflection on the passion of our Saviour and His resurrection. We bring afresh the resurrection power of Jesus to bear over every area of our lives and we stand in total victory over death in Jesus’ name. Amen.
