WEEK 22: (June 13 – June 19, 2022)
WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS:
Galatians 6: 8 – 9 (NIV)
8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
INTERPRETATION
Human actions bring consequences corresponding with the nature of those actions. Drawing illustrations of this principle as witnessed in the common affairs of life, it’s crystal clear that sowing begets reaping. Whenever a farmer goes and sows his prepared land, or the reaper gathers in the harvest, or the passer-by surveys the crop as he looks on the fields, waving with the ripening grain, and fruits of various kind, a voice continually sounds in the ears of each, “Whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye also reap.”
In the text under review, Paul reinforced the universal principle that people reap what they sow in life. Job said something similar, “As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same” (Job 4:8). The crops we get will be decided by the seed we put in the ground. In other words, natural cause and effect still apply, both to the Christian and to the unbeliever. There are two kinds of good possible to man; the one enjoyed by our animal beings, the other by our spirits. There are two kinds of harvest, and the labour which procures the one has no tendency to produce the other.
Apostle Paul clarifies this principle of sowing and reaping, in the context of the Spirit of God. Paul has demonstrated in his letter that it is possible to “sow to the flesh,” meaning to invest our lives in serving ourselves, through two different mistakes. The Judaizers were urging the Galatians to trust their flesh in the sense that they wanted them to hope that their attempts to follow the law of Moses would make them justified before God (Galatians 2:4). Paul says to those who would trust their own effort in this way that what they will reap, instead, is corruption. That’s because the product of our “flesh,” our ability to do good in our own power with our bodies, is poisoned with sin. It can’t grow the good crop of righteousness and eternal life.
At the same time, some of the Galatian Christians were apparently “sowing to the flesh” by doing whatever felt good to their bodies. They were indulging in sin. The result would be a harvest of corruption.
Eternal life is only available through the power of God’s Spirit. Those who “sow to the Spirit” in that they are trusting Christ for salvation and receiving God’s Spirit will receive eternal life. Then they will continue to live in the strength of God’s Spirit and bear the fruit described in Galatians 5:22–23.
Beloved, the mistake men make is that they sow for the earth and expect to win spiritual blessings, and vice versa. Christian men complain that the unprincipled get on in life and that the saints are kept back. But the saints must pay the price: “they have as their reward something better for which they do pay. No man can have two harvests for one sowing. This is another reminder to always “sow to the spirit” as the flesh does not give any reward.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael, thank you for your love and mercy. Purge our heart of all iniquities and forgive our iniquities. We pray that you help us sow to the spirit; we invite you into our hearts, strengthen us to pursue the fruits of the spirit and empower us to resist sowing to the flesh that we shall inherit your kingdom in the end. This and many more we ask for through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thank you and God bless. Shalom.
