WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS:

II Kings 4: 2 – 6 (NIV)

2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” 3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” 5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

INTERPRETATION

The ways of God are mysterious. God’s power is ever-dynamic; he works his wonders in diverse ways.

In the scripture under review. God demonstrated his mighty hand of power and this is a clear attestation and another instance of His ability to work wonders in mysterious ways. The widow came to Prophet Elisha for help against their creditors. Though her appeal here was ultimate to the Lord, she sought help through Elisha. Her appeal was based on two facts – as one of the sons of the prophets, her husband had been a servant and student of Elisha and her husband had revered the Lord. This scenario reminds us of how God usually meets the needs of His people through people, especially believers ministering to other believers. That we have such a caring response to one another is one of the great themes of the New Testament but this especially draws attention to our need to be more involved in the needs of those in our personal care or in our ministry. This event demonstrated the fullness of God’s power to provide and multiply.

In addition, when our need is urgent, and we spread it before God, the question is never about the amount of oil, but of the empty vessels. We fear that there will not be enough oil; God is concerned that we fail to bring sufficient vessels to hold all He wants to give. The oil was multiplied in the pouring, as the meal of the other widow was increased in the spending. God’s oil will never be exhausted so long as we can receive and impart. According to our faith will it be done? It is not a question of how much God can give, but how much we can use. This is a lesson to experiencing God’s power in its fullness.

Beloved, like the poor widow, we all have certain needs – spiritual, emotional and physical but God knows those needs completely and He cares about them personally. Our most fundamental need is to come to him in faith but with empty vessels so that He might multiply our lives according to His purposes. We should not limit God’s capacity by our lack of faith and obedience to Him. He is the One who is able to do superabundantly above all we ask or think. What is required of us? Trust Him, have faith in Him, have faith in His love and experience the fullness of His power!

PRAYER

Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael, Our Father and Our Lord, thank you for your Word. Forgive us and have mercy on us. We pray this day that we experience the fullness of your power. Strengthen us to trust in you and you only. Help us to stand firm in your love and empower us to do your will and be obedient to your instructions. May your blessings domiciled in your power rest on us this day and may we forever dwell in the understanding of who you are. This and many more we ask for through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thank you and God bless. Shalom.
