WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS:
2 Samuel 7: 1, 9 – 10 (NIV)
1After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him
9I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning
INTERPRETATION
David was described as a man after God’s heart. He was a teenager when God promised that he would become king. David experienced many difficulties as he served Saul. Some records have it that Saul tried to kill David sixteen times, and that is apart from the times that David was in danger on the field of battle. Eventually, however, “the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him.” Though difficulties still lay ahead for David; some of them were of his own making but others were not. Nevertheless, in this time of respite, the Lord had fulfilled his promises to David. This demonstrates God as a peace maker and giver.
On the other hand, God promises David a great name. We read in verse 9b, “And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.” God promises to make great David’s immediate reputation as well as his enduring legacy. David is the greatest king of Israel, and he is still revered today. This shows God as the only one that can make a king. Also, God promises David a place for his people. We read in verse 10, “And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more.” God promises security for his people.
Do you see how God is gracious? Biblical grace is “unmerited favor.” David was the recipient of God’s unmerited favor. That is, David did absolutely nothing to earn or merit the favor of God. God’s grace is unconditional. Little wonder he was described as a man after God’s heart. God is gracious. Reading that chapter further, it was mentioned that David would want to build a temple for God. David’s intention was good, but neither was he the man nor was that the time for temple-building. The sword could not yet be exchanged for the trowel, but in the meantime, the will was accepted in lieu of the act. It was then God’s turn to pour out a perfect avalanche of blessing, which must have made David forget those weary years of waiting and wandering.
Beloved, do not be anxious about the future. Use your life and all its resources for God, and he will care for you. No tongue can exaggerate the goodness and mercy which God lays up for them that trust in Him before the sons of men. And it is because He loves that He does not hesitate to chasten. Embrace God and experience His peace; he will make you a king.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael, thank you for your word. Father, we pray that you give us peace and let us experience your love. Strengthen us to dwell in your grace and help us to trust in you only. This and many more we ask for through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thank you and God bless. Shalom.
