1 John 5:14-15

[14]And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

[15]And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

INTERPRETATION

Prayer is one of the most profound privileges we have as Christians. It is not just a religious duty but a powerful lifeline that connects us to our Heavenly Father. Yet, many believers wrestle with whether their prayers are truly effective. The Bible provides a clear assurance: when we pray according to God’s will, we can have confidence that He hears us and will answer.

1 John 5:14 does not declare unto us a vague hope but a solid promise. It tells us that the key to effective prayer is alignment with God’s will. When our desires and petitions are in harmony with His plans and purposes, we can be assured of divine intervention.

To pray according to God’s will, we must first seek to understand His will. Romans 12:2 gives us insight: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” By immersing ourselves in Scripture and cultivating a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit, we become more attuned to God’s desires.

God’s will is often revealed in His Word. For instance, it is His will that we live holy lives (1 Thessalonians 4:3), that we love one another (John 13:34), and that we give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). When our prayers are shaped by these truths, they carry divine authority.

No one exemplified praying according to God’s will more perfectly than Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane, facing the anguish of the cross, Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39). This surrender to the Father’s plan, even in suffering, teaches us that true prayer seeks God’s glory and not just our comfort.

When we adopt this attitude of submission, trusting that God knows what is best for us, our prayers take on a new power. They move beyond personal agendas and align with God’s kingdom purposes. As Jesus taught in the Lord’s Prayer: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).

When we are unsure how to pray, we can rely on the Holy Spirit to guide our petitions, ensuring they are in line with God’s heart. Praying in the Spirit allows us to access divine wisdom and insight, especially in times of confusion or trial.

Praying according to God’s will is not about reciting the right words or following a formula; it is about seeking His heart and trusting His goodness. When we align our prayers with His plans, we open the door for heaven to invade earth, for miracles to unfold, and for our faith to be strengthened. Let us be a people who pray with confidence, knowing that our Father hears us and answers in ways that are beyond what we could ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

PRAYER

Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.

Dear Father, we align our hearts with your Will by the fellowship of your grace. May our supplications before you ever echo the words of Jesus: “Not my will, but yours be done.” In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
