INTERPRETATION
The workplace is one of the primary arenas where the character of a Christian man is tested and displayed. A man’s true measure is not found in the suit he wears to work, but in the spirit he brings to the work itself; because before God, every office is an altar, and every task is a testimony of who we truly are when no one is watching. While many men desire success, promotion, and recognition, God’s concern goes beyond achievements to the manner in which work is done. Colossians 3:23-24 teaches that a Christian man must approach his work with diligence, faithfulness, and a sense of divine responsibility.
God created man with the responsibility to work. Before sin entered the world, Adam was placed in the Garden of Eden to dress it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). This shows that work is a divine assignment bestowed to man. Therefore, every Christian man should view his occupation as a stewardship entrusted to him by God. Whether he is an employee, entrepreneur, artisan, civil servant, or professional, he is called to honour God through his labour.
A Christian man demonstrates diligence by giving his best effort in every task. He does not work carelessly, lazily, or half-heartedly. Proverbs 22:29 says, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” Diligence is evidence of maturity, responsibility, and commitment. A man who is diligent at work is more likely to provide for his family, earn the trust of his employers, and positively influence those around him.
Integrity is another mark of a diligent and faithful employee. In a world where dishonesty, corruption, and shortcuts have become common, the Christian man chooses the path of righteousness. Proverbs 11:3 says, “The integrity of the upright shall guide them.” He refuses to manipulate records, steal from his employer, waste organizational resources, or engage in unethical practices. Like the biblical example of Joseph in Egypt, he remains trustworthy even when no one is watching. Joseph’s diligence, integrity, and fear of God eventually brought him from slavery and imprisonment to a position of leadership and influence. His life demonstrates that God honours faithful service.
Diligence also requires perseverance. There are times when hard work seems unnoticed, promotions are delayed, and efforts appear unrewarded. Nevertheless, the Christian man must remains steadfast because his confidence is in God and not men. Galatians 6:9 encourages believers, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” He understands that divine reward is certain even when human appreciation is absent. God sees every sacrifice, every act of faithfulness, and every moment of honest labour.
A Christian man should recognize that his ultimate employer is Christ. Ephesians 6:5-7 instructs servants to obey their masters with sincerity of heart, “as unto Christ.” Human employers may fail to appreciate his efforts, but God never overlooks faithful service. This understanding helps him remain committed even during difficult seasons. Instead of working merely for salaries, promotions, or applause, he works to glorify God and fulfil his calling as a Christian witness in the workplace.
Therefore, every Christian man must view his workplace as a mission field and his profession as a divine calling. The diligent and faithful employee is more than a good worker; he is a man who reflects the character of Christ through his labour. His dedication, honesty, perseverance, and sense of responsibility distinguish him from others. Through such a life, he becomes a blessing to his employer, a provider for his family, a testimony to society, and a servant who brings honour to God. When a man works heartily as unto the Lord, he becomes a reflection of Christ in his workplace, a blessing to his employer, and a testimony to the world.
