INTERPRETATION

The fear of God is one of the most misunderstood Christian concepts yet full of truth and wisdom. Indeed, God is full of dread and is to be feared. But does God really need us to fear Him? What does God stand to gain from us being scared of Him? What does the Bible really mean by the fear of God? Let’s journey together as we unveil the answers to these questions.

There are several interesting instances in the Bible where men chose not to regard God. None of those instances has been recorded to have any effect whatsoever on God. Whether a man chooses to fear God or not, God remains who He is. He is merciful and just regardless of man’s posture towards Him. Therefore, it becomes clear that man is the one who becomes shaped positively when he adopts the right posture towards God.

God doesn’t depend on us to be who He is. We are the ones who depend on Him for our sustenance. God is not insecure and thus does not require us to be scared of Him. However, we can not simply relate with God casually and expect to enjoy the dividends of rich fellowship from Him. In every relationship, there are guiding principles and protocols. People relate with one another based on how well they have come to discern one another.

It is impossible to see God in the fullness of His Glory and deal with Him without honour. Our fear of God stems from the revelation of God’s awesomeness. He is so full of power yet He chooses to be merciful (Psalms 103:8). How can a God be so powerful and unquestionable yet merciful and kind? So merciful that He went as far as dying for us. It is this revelation that fills out heart with love and honour for God. There is none like Him.

CCC Hymn 539 reveals that God doesn’t want the death of sinners rather He wants them to repent. God does not scare or threaten us with His judgments. His judgment is equally a revelation of His person as much as His mercies. This is why we fear Him.

May we receive grace to increase in the revelation of God’s nature and power that out hearts may be filled with increasing wisdom in Jesus name.

PRAYER

Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.

Heavenly Father, teach us to walk in the fear of You each day. Let our hearts tremble at the thought of sinning against You, and fill us with wisdom to honor You in all we do. May our reverence for Your holiness draw us closer to You in love, obedience, and worship, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
