WEEKLY BIBLE READING:

2 Corinthians 5:18-20

[18]And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

[19]To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

[20]Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

INTERPRETATION

The ministry of reconciliation is a profound and central theme in the Christian faith. It is rooted in the passion and death of Jesus Christ, whose ultimate sacrifice was to reconcile mankind back to God. This ministry is not only a divine act but also a calling for every believer to continue in their daily lives. The story of reconciliation begins with the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, where sin created a gap between humanity and God.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see God’s relentless pursuit of His people, culminating in the New Testament with the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection were the ultimate acts of love and reconciliation. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.”

Jesus’ passion and death were not just historical events but the fulfilment of God’s redemptive plan. On the cross, Jesus bore the sins of the world, bridging the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. His resurrection signifies the victory over sin and death, offering new life to all who believe. This act of reconciliation is a testament to God’s immense love and grace, as stated in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Having been reconciled to God through Christ, believers are now entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation. This is not a passive calling but an active mission. As ambassadors of Christ, we are called to share the message of reconciliation with others, embodying the love and grace we have received. Paul emphasizes this in 2 Corinthians 5:20, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

This ministry involves both proclamation and demonstration. We are to proclaim the gospel, the good news of Jesus’ sacrificial love and the offer of forgiveness and new life. But our words must be accompanied by actions that reflect God’s love and justice. This means living out the values of the kingdom of God in our relationships, communities, and the world at large.

Practical Ways to Live Out the Ministry of Reconciliation

  1. Forgiveness: Just as we have been forgiven, we are called to forgive others. This can be challenging, but it is a vital aspect of living out our faith.
  2. Peacemaking: This involves actively seeking to resolve conflicts, promote understanding, and build bridges between people.
  3. Service: Whether through acts of kindness, volunteering, or supporting those in need, our service reflects the heart of the gospel.
  4. Advocacy: This means speaking out against injustice and working towards a more equitable society.

By living out the principles of forgiveness, peacemaking, service, and advocacy, we can reflect God’s love and bring others into the embrace of His grace. Let us embrace this calling with passion and dedication, knowing that we are ambassadors of Christ, entrusted with the precious message of reconciliation.

Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.

Dear Father, we ask that you awaken us to the consciousness of our duty as ambassadors for you in this world. Help us to live our lives daily reconciling men back to you through our words and deeds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
