WEEKLY BIBLE READING:
Romans 5:6-8
[6]For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
[7]For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
[8]But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
INTERPRETATION
The nature of God’s love is both humbling and awe-inspiring. It is not just something He does — it is who He is. As 1 John 4:8 declares, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” In a world that often conditions love upon performance, appearance, or status, the love of God stands as a radiant contrast — a perfect, eternal, and unfailing love that is unlike any other.
God’s love does not depend on our actions or merit. He loves because He is love, not because we are lovable. This truth is seen vividly in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God didn’t wait for us to become righteous before extending His love. He chose us at our worst, embracing us with open arms when we had nothing to offer.
This unconditional love was beautifully demonstrated in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15: 11–32). The father’s love did not waver, even when the son rebelled and squandered his inheritance. Upon the son’s return, the father ran to meet him, wrapped him in an embrace, and restored him to sonship. This is a glimpse of the Father’s heart toward us.
At the core of the gospel is sacrificial love. The cross is the ultimate expression of this nature. John 3:16 declares, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God gave His best, His Son, to rescue the very ones who rejected Him.
Jesus, the embodiment of God’s love, laid down His life for us. In John 15:13, He says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” This love cost God everything and gained us everything. It is not a passive love—it is powerful, active, and self-giving.
When we encounter God’s love, we are never the same. His love breaks chains, heals wounds, and restores identity. Paul writes in Romans 8: 38–39, *“For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”* His love doesn’t just find us — it holds us securely and changes us.
God’s love renews our minds, purifies our hearts, and draws us into a deeper relationship with Him. As we abide in His love, we begin to reflect it. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.” Our ability to love others is birthed from receiving His love ourselves.
Unlike human love, which can be fickle or fade with time, God’s love is steadfast. Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Let us not only receive this love but also reflect it in a world starving for true affection. Let us be vessels through which the boundless, unchanging love of God is made known.
