John 1:11-13

[11]He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

[12]But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

[13]Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

 INTERPRETATION

The concept of rebirth, or being “born again,” is central to Christian theology and signifies a profound transformation in the life of a believer. This rebirth is not a physical one but a spiritual renewal that marks the beginning of a new life in Christ. Through this experience, we become sons and daughters of God, adopted into His family and granted the privilege of calling Him our Father.

The term “born again” originates from Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council. In John 3:3-7, Jesus explains, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus, puzzled by this statement, asks how a person can be born again when they are old. Jesus clarifies that this rebirth is not of the flesh but of the Spirit: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:5-6).

The rebirth experience is intricately linked to our identity as children of God. John 1:12-13 reveals that our status as God’s children is not a result of human effort or lineage but a divine act of grace. Through faith in Christ, we are adopted into God’s family. Romans 8:15-17 elaborates on this adoption: “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”

This adoption is a profound privilege. As sons and daughters of God, we are co-heirs with Christ, sharing in His sufferings and glory. This new identity transforms our relationship with God, allowing us to approach Him with confidence and intimacy.

The rebirth experience is also closely tied to the concept of justification by faith. In Galatians 3:26-27, Paul writes, “For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” This passage emphasizes that our status as God’s children is secured through faith in Christ and symbolized through baptism, which represents our union with Him in His death and resurrection. As we embrace this new life, we are called to live in accordance with God’s will, empowered by the Holy Spirit to walk in His ways and reflect His glory to the world.

Thinking of your rebirth status or you’re not sure if you’re born again? Say this prayer below:
