WEEK 31: (September 19 – September 25, 2022)
WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS:
Ecclesiastes 11: 4 – 6 (NIV)
4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.
5 As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed[a] in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.
At times, life can be very uncertain. The vicissitudes of life can be so overwhelming so much so that it becomes difficult to achieve success. Many tend to rest on their oars and believe that since they are believers everything good will come easy to them without putting in the work. This is not the case. Once there is a little challenge, they shy away from taking responsibilities. This text reminds us that we ought not to be deterred from discharging our duties by trivial difficulties. The nature of the duties to be discharged—sowing and reaping. They must be attended to in their own proper season. It would be useless for a farmer to scatter the seed upon the ground in midsummer, or to go to reap at Christmas. It must be attended to in season or never. Now is the time. This underscores the need to do things at the right time without minding the difficulties. If done this way, uncertainty becomes predictable.
On the other hand, the difficulties in our way whilst discharging these duties might come like winds, clouds, difficulties within, without, from the world, from the devil. Doubts, fears, weakness etc. – these are quite common to humanity and powerful in their resistance against us. For each of us, it’s quite different and the tempest does not always blow in the same direction, nor with the same force. That is why you see some are ‘enjoying’ even in their difficult moment.
But here is the good news – those difficulties are all under the control of our Heavenly Father. You only need the resolute mind with which these difficulties must be overcome, and the duties discharged. We must not look upon the difficulties as things insurmountable. The wind, though it troubles the sower, does not actually prevent him from sowing, and the cloud, though it threatens to pour its contents upon the reaper, does not stop him. For some it’s about going ahead to start a business, for some others, it’s about starting a new course or getting that degree while for another set, it’s about taking that bold step that will usher in a new era.
Beloved, this is a reminder that our difficulties are not such that cannot be overcome and that we should put in the work regardless of the circumstances. We ought to add fresh vigour because of the difficulty. In all our exertions we ought to depend upon God for strength and prosperity. Let us act and pray!
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael. Thank you for your Word; thank you for your mercy. We pray that you strengthen us through difficult times. Enable our knowledge in you that we shall have a proper understanding of who we are in you. Help us to overcome temptations and the troubles of this world. Protect our minds from all evils and guide us through storms and calamities. Make us victorious in all ways and may we eat the good of being a victor. This and many more we ask for through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Thank you and God bless. Shalom.
