INTERPRETATION
Since the time of John the Baptist, it has been consistently declared that the kingdom of God is at hand; this is about over two thousand years ago, up until now, Jesus has not come. Many believe that Jesus is no longer coming for so many baseless reasons. Of a truth, as seen and established in the scripture, Jesus is coming back. One of the questions that come to mind is when will he return?
In verse 36 of the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 24, Jesus says “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” No one knows when He will return to set up His kingdom. Jesus included a picture of apparent normality like in Noah’s day – meals, marriages, agriculture. From an ordinary perspective, we can become deluded that we don’t need to keep vigilant watch in prayerful preparation for his return. But this is not true!
Periodically, many have claimed to have discovered a secret that indicates the date of Christ’s return, but such claims are not true. There have been instances of when some self-acclaimed ‘God’s assistant’ put a date to Christ’s return; some say 1900, some 2000. Jesus will return when we least expect it. Christians who are expecting His return will know it will be a great day.
Ultimately, the important question to ponder about the second coming of Jesus is ‘are we ready?’ Many would be surprised to know that they are not part of God’s kingdom when Jesus comes to judge the world. When He returns, we will have to give an account of how we lived for Him. If we are faithful and wise servants, we will be ready. Jesus will see us doing His will when He returns. There are many comings of the Son of man before the final one to judgment. We may derive the full benefit of our Lord’s words, even though we have arrived at no settled opinion as to the precise order of future events. The hour of our death is as uncertain as that of His coming in the clouds. For each, we should be ready!
Beloved, this is a reminder to be prepared for Jesus second coming by giving our lives to Christ, believing in His death and resurrection; perhaps, this is a season we do a remembrance of His ascension. Revelation 22: 12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.” When He comes, what will be your reward?
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael, thank you for your word. Into your hands we commit our lives, draw us near to you. Help our spirit to stay true to your instructions and strengthen us to flee from all appearances of evil. That in the end, we shall reign with you. This and many more we ask for through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
