[29] for our God is a consuming fire.

INTERPRETATION

Our God is a God of love, mercy, and compassion (Psalm 103:8). Yet, He is also a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29). His holiness demands reverence, obedience, and purity from His people. When we talk about God as a Fearsome God, Holy Fire, we are reminded that His presence is not to be taken lightly. He burns away sin, exposes unrighteousness, and purifies His people so that they can reflect His glory.

When Isaiah saw the Lord in Isaiah 6:1-5, high and lifted up, he cried out, “Woe is me!” because God’s holiness revealed his own sinfulness. In Exodus 3:2-5, Moses encountered God in the burning bush. The fire did not consume the bush, but Moses was commanded to take off his sandals because the ground was holy. God’s holiness should humble us. He is not our equal; He is God Almighty, separate from sin, we must reference Him with an holy fear.

In our everyday life, we cannot live carelessly; God calls us to holy living. 1 Peter 1:15-16 says,  “Be ye holy; for I am holy.” When faced with temptation, remember that God’s holy fire exposes and consumes hidden sin. We must approach God on His terms, not ours. Sin cannot stand before His holy fire for it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31).

Fire does not only destroy; it purifies gold and silver (Malachi 3:2-3). God sits as a refiner and purifier of souls. In our daily life, trials and challenges can be God’s refining fire to shape our character. Instead of complaining in hardship, ask, “Lord, what are You refining in me through this situation?”

In the book of Zechariah 13:9, we understand that, God allows trials to refine His people, making them call on His name in truth. God’s fire is not only destructive but also redemptive. He burns away the dross in our lives so that His image can shine through us.

Fire consumes anything that competes with it. Deuteronomy 4:24 says,  “The Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.” In our daily life, God will not share His place with money, pride, addictions, or selfish ambition. If our careers, relationships, or possessions take God’s place, His fire will expose and challenge it. God will never share His glory nor sovereignty with any creations (Isaiah 42:8), He deserves all our being all the time.

The same fire that judges sin is the fire that empowers us for service (Acts 2:3-4). God gives us holy boldness to live and witness for Him. The Fearsome God, Holy Fire is not to be treated casually. His holiness demands reverence, His fire consumes sin, purifies the faithful, and empowers the Church. As children of God, we must live in awe of His majesty and walk in the power of His Spirit. God’s holy fire can either consume or empower us. To the unrepentant, it is judgment. To the faithful, it is purification and power.
