[2] And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
INTERPRETATION
The wilderness in Scripture is not just a dry land of sand and dust; it is God’s testing ground, a place where His people encounter His holiness, discipline, and justice. It is in the wilderness that the fearsome God reveals Himself, not to terrify without purpose, but to shape, to purify, and to judge iniquity. The children of Israel spent forty years wandering through it, and during that time, they came face to face with a God whose power, holiness, and majesty could not be ignored.
When Israel walked in the wilderness after leaving Egypt, they met this God. He was their Deliverer, but also their Judge. The wilderness exposed their hearts, their rebellion, murmuring, idolatry, and disobedience. And God dealt with each form of iniquity. In Numbers 11, the people murmured against God for food, doubting His provision. The anger of the Lord burned, and fire consumed the outskirts of the camp. This reminds us that ingratitude and constant grumbling offend a holy God who supplies all things.
At Sinai, while Moses was on the mountain, the people built a golden calf (Exodus 32). God’s wrath broke out, and many perished. The wilderness reveals that God will not share His glory with idols, whether carved images or the idols of our modern hearts. Idolatry is giving God’s glory to another. Today, idols may not be golden calves, but money, pride, power, and pleasure we allow to sit on the throne of our hearts (1 John 5:21). We need to resist the temptation of prioritizing today’s idols over God.
When Israel refused to enter the Promised Land because of fear (Numbers 13:30–33; 14:1–4) God swore they would wander forty years, and their generation would die in the wilderness. Unbelief cost them their destiny (Hebrews 3:19). This serves as warning against the dangers of unbelief and disobedience. Unbelief can lead to missed opportunities and delayed promises. Faith is essential for entering into God’s promises and experiencing His blessings. We need to examine our hearts and trust God, lest we miss out on His promises due to unbelief.
Just as Moses interceded for Israel, Jesus intercedes for us. God’s wrath against sin is real, but His mercy through Christ is greater. God still tests our hearts in the wilderness of life, our trials, delays, and struggles. We must respond with faith, obedience, and gratitude. Christ is now our Mediator, greater than Moses (Hebrews 3:3). In Him, we find mercy to stand before the fearsome God.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.
Dear Father, we acknowledge You as the Holy and Fearsome God. Forgive our murmuring, our idols, our rebellion, and our unbelief. Help us to walk in faith, gratitude, and obedience. As You carried Israel through the wilderness, carry us by Your mercy until we enter our promised inheritance in Christ. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
