INTERPRETATION
Every time we journey through the pages of scripture, we are reminded of the several instances in which the realities of our present world differ from those who lived both in the Old and New Testament dispensations. By realities, the focus here is not just on technology and scientific innovations. Rather, it is the quality of life that men manifest.
Ever since Adam and Eve were sent from the Garden of Eden, (Genesis 3:23) the world began to experience a progressive and speedy departure from the original image that the Creator had in mind when he created the earth. Remember that Adam and Eve had no children when they left Eden. They began to reproduce in their fallen state and their offspring continued to replicate their sinful nature and continuously the earth continued to play host to several anomalies. A noteworthy point is the fact that it wasn’t just humans who suffered the consequences of the disobedience of man in the beginning. In Isaiah 11:6-8, we saw Isaiah prophesy that a time will soon come when even wild beasts will be restored to their original harmless mode.
All that God created was declared to be good. However, a thing is only good and viable for as long as it stays in touch with its maker. As soon as you begin to operate a created entity contrary to the creator’s specifications, it becomes impossible to sustain the created entity in its perfected state. The only assignment that God gave to Adam while he was in Eden was to dress and keep the garden. This implies that Adam was responsible for the sustenance of all of God’s creation. Adam was saddled with the obligation to ensure that Eden was in order.
Now look at this. According to Genesis 2:10-14, there was a river that flowed out of Eden to water the entire face of the earth. This means that there was an earthly geographical space outside of Eden and what sustains this additional outer space was the outflows from Eden. God’s design for keeping the entire cosmos in shape was a spillover of the experiences within Eden. The garden of Eden was a similitude of God’s Presence because we can see in Genesis 3:8 that Adam had access to encounters with God in the garden of Eden. Adam’s role didn’t require him to meddle with the rest of the cosmos outside of God’s Presence (the Garden of Eden). The reality of whatever he did with respect to dressing and keeping the garden will be replicated in every place that the river flowed to because the river was designed to replicate God’s Presence everywhere on the earth. This was the basis of Habakkuk’s prophecy in Habakkuk 2:14, that the knowledge of God’s glory will cover the entire earth as waters cover the sea.
When Adam and Eve sinned, God decided to cut off the outflows of His Presence to the earth by positioning Cherubims at the gate of the Garden. Thus, the earth lost its connection to its means of sustenance – God’s Presence. The next thing we saw in the scriptures was a rise of wickedness, oppression, concupiscence, and every other form of unrighteousness. Man continued to find it more comfortable daily to express his sinful nature. Man who was supposed to replicate Divine civilizations on the earth by the inspiration of God’s Spirit suddenly began to erect ungodly monuments and standards. From the practice of polygamy to the building of the tower of Babel, the worship of Baal, Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image, etc., several realities that are contrary to God’s Presence began to feature on the earth.
When the Apostle Paul was inspired to write the first chapter of his epistle to the Romans, homosexuality was clearly a sin (vs 26-27). Now in certain nations of the world, homosexuality has become so backed up by the law that those who speak against it are the ones who get punished for committing a crime. The Psalmist cried out in Psalms 82:5 that the foundations of the earth are in a chaotic state. Through the sacrifices of Jesus, man has now received access to God’s presence again yet the earth doesn’t seem to be experiencing as much restoration as it should. What more could be missing?
Meditate on this week’s write-up and anticipate our next releaShinse where we’ll be answering the question raised.
