[3] If the foundations be destroyed, What can the righteous do?

INTERPRETATION

The home is the first institution established by God before the church and before government. It is the foundation upon which society is built. Psalm 11:3 confronts us with a serious reality. When foundations collapse, even the righteous struggle to function effectively. Many of the crises in families today are not the result of lack of effort but lack of order. God designed the home to function according to divine principles. When those principles are ignored, disorder follows.

God is intentional and orderly in all His works. From creation, He demonstrated structure, sequence, and purpose. According to 1 Corinthians 14:33, God is not the author of confusion but of peace. This means that confusion in the home is a signal that divine order has been disrupted. In Genesis 2:15, God gave Adam responsibility before He gave him a wife, showing that order precedes the relationship. God’s order provides clarity of roles and expectations. When families return to God’s blueprint, confusion gives way to peace, and chaos is replaced with direction.

For every member of a family, God assigns responsibility to all. For the man, the leadership responsibility falls on his lap as the head of the home. This leadership moves beyond dominance, it is about accountability. According to 1 Timothy 5:8, any man who fails to provide for his household has denied the faith. Provision goes beyond finances, it includes emotional support, spiritual guidance, and moral direction. Genesis 3:19 links provision to responsibility, reminding men that provision is part of their divine assignment. When a man rises to his role as provider and leader, the home gains direction, security, and confidence. Where men abdicate responsibility, disorder naturally follows.

Another great responsibility of a man is spiritual leadership. Ephesians 5:23 identifies the man as the head of the home, reflecting Christ’s leadership over the church. Spiritual leadership means setting godly standards, leading in prayer, and ensuring that God’s Word guides family decisions. Job 1:5 presents a man who consistently prayed for his household, providing spiritual covering. A man who provides financially but neglects spiritual leadership leaves his family exposed.

Conversely, God created the woman as a helper suitable for the man, according to Genesis 2:18. This role is not one of inferiority but of partnership and strength. Proverbs 14:1 teaches that a wise woman builds her house, while foolish actions can destroy it. Ephesians 5:22 explains submission as alignment with divine order, not oppression. A wife supports leadership, contributes wisdom, and strengthens the home through cooperation.

Additionally, the emotional and relational atmosphere of the home is often shaped by the wife. Proverbs 31:26 describes a woman who speaks with wisdom and kindness. Titus 2:4 to 5 emphasizes love, self control, and diligence as qualities that preserve the home. Colossians 3:12 highlights compassion, humility, and patience. A godly wife nurtures peace through wise communication, prayer, and respectful conduct. When peace reigns in the home, order is easier to maintain, and relationships flourish.

However, children as members of a family are not passive members of the home; they have responsibilities as well. Ephesians 6:1 to 3 commands children to obey their parents and attach a promise of long life and well being. Proverbs 1:8 encourages children to listen to instruction, while Colossians 3:20 teaches that obedience pleases the Lord. Obedient children contribute to peace and order in the home. Teaching children respect for authority prepares them for responsible adulthood and secures the future of the family.

Ultimately, no home restores itself by effort alone. Prayer invites God into the rebuilding process. Joel 2:25 promises restoration of lost years, while Malachi 4:6 speaks of hearts being turned back to one another. James 5:16 affirms the power of prayer to bring healing. Families that pray together remain sensitive to God’s direction and resilient against challenges. Prayer sustains order and preserves unity.

In conclusion, men must lead and provide, wives must support and build, and children must obey and honor. When each person aligns with God’s design, the home becomes a place of peace, strength, and divine presence.

PRAYER

Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.

Heavenly Father, we submit our homes to Your divine order. Strengthen men to lead with responsibility, empower women to build with wisdom, and teach children to obey with joy. Restore broken foundations and let Your peace reign in our homes. May our families reflect Your glory and stand firm in every season. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
