[6] And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
[7] and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
INTERPRETATION
The family is God’s divine institution and His design is that it should be spiritually nourished in order to remain strong, united, and fruitful. Spiritual nourishment means feeding the family with God’s Word, prayer, and godly living so that every member grows in faith and righteousness. Just as the body cannot survive without food, the family cannot survive spiritually without God.
The foundation of spiritual nourishment begins with the Word of God dwelling in the hearts of parents. Deuteronomy 6:6 says these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. This shows that spiritual leadership starts from personal devotion before public instruction. A parent cannot effectively teach what they do not know or practice. When the Word of God fills the heart, it transforms the mind and produces godly character. David declared, Your word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You (Psalm 119:11).
God further commanded that His Word must be taught diligently to children. Deuteronomy 6:7 instructs that, you shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Spiritual instruction must be intentional, consistent, and woven into daily living. The scripture says train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).
Spiritual nourishment also requires a lifestyle of prayer in the family. Prayer invites God’s presence and power into the home. Joshua declared, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15). Prayer builds unity and dependence on God. The scripture instructs that in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6). A praying family stands strong in times of challenge.
Another essential aspect of spiritual nourishment is living by godly example. Children learn more from observation than instruction alone. Parents must demonstrate faith, love, humility, and obedience in daily conduct. Also, families should read scripture, pray, and praise God together consistently.
However, dependence on the Holy Spirit sustains spiritual growth in the family. Human strength alone cannot maintain righteousness. The scripture says, walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). A family led by the Spirit will overcome temptation and walk in wisdom.
The result of spiritual nourishment is divine blessing and generational impact. When a family fears the Lord and walks in His ways, they experience stability and fulfillment. The scripture says, blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways (Psalm 128:1). God promised to keep covenant and mercy with those who love Him and keep His commandments (Deuteronomy 7:9). Spiritual nourishment secures the future of the family and establishes a legacy of faith.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for establishing the family as Your divine institution. We ask that Your Word dwell richly in our hearts and homes. Help the parents to be a good example in word, conduct and grace to teach the children diligently and consistently in the fear of the Lord. Help our homes to depend on You in prayer. Fill our homes with love and unity. Establish and nourish our families, protect our children, and let our homes flourish in Your presence for generations to come. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
