WEEK 30: (July 26 – August 1, 2021)
WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS:
John 4:34 – 38 (KJV)
- Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
- Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
- And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
- And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
- I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
INTERPRETATION
Since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, God has made several attempts to restore man unto Himself. From the time of Noah, through the old covenant, new covenant and the birth and death of Jesus Christ. The arrival of Jesus heralded a new era for mankind, ushering us into a fresh dimension of attaining eternal life – believing in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The scripture for today reminds us of the importance of embracing salvation with immediate effect. The story that surrounds this passage is a familiar one, the one about Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well. Jesus and His disciples were on their way to Galilee; but He “needed to go through Samaria”. When He got to the city of Sychar in Samaria—being physically exhausted from the long journey—He came to rest by a well. And while His disciples went into town to buy food, He struck up a conversation with a Samaritan woman who came to draw water. She was a woman whose life was marked with sin and sadness; and yet He lovingly, graciously, step-by-step, revealed Himself to be the Messiah—the Saviour of sinners such as her. This is an instance of God’s love revealed to man through Jesus Christ.
For all the centuries of the Old Testament era that preceded the coming of our Lord—and even up to the time of John the Baptist—the prophets pulled out all the rocks, did the plowing and sowed the seed. That hard work had already been done. And what’s more, the Savior had come according to the prophetic promises—the Lord Jesus Himself—to reveal His identity in this world, to proclaim His kingdom, to die on the cross for our salvation, to raise from the dead, and to ascend to the Father.
All that is needed has already been done! Ours isn’t the hard work that comes before the harvest. Ours is the privileged task of the harvest itself! Jesus has sent us to reap that for which we have not laboured! Others have done the hard work, and we have entered into the benefits of their labours!
We shouldn’t sit around procrastinating because the work seems hard! We should be grateful and confident in a work that has already been prepared! This is the ultimate gain.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael, thank you for your word, thank you for the gift of salvation, for paying the ultimate price on the cross for our redemption. We pray that you guide our soul to access this salvation, let your Holy Spirit come into our heart, cleanse us from sins and make our path straight with you; that we might inherit eternal life. Glory to your Holy name. This and many more we ask for in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Thank you and God bless. Shalom.
