2 Corinthians 3:17-18
[17]Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
[18]But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
INTERPRETATION
One of the most profound mysteries in the Christian journey is the ongoing transformation that occurs in the life of a believer — a process that takes us from one level of glory to another. This transformation is not a momentary experience, but a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ. The Apostle Paul captures this truth beautifully in 2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV):
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
This verse shows that as we continually gaze upon the Lord — through His Word, in worship, in prayer, and in obedience — we are being changed. The word “changed” here is translated from the Greek word metamorphoō, which also gives us the English word metamorphosis. Just like a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, we are being spiritually transformed into the image of Christ.
The glory we are moving into is not a worldly radiance but the very nature and presence of God being formed in us. It begins when we come to Christ and continues as we walk with Him daily. At salvation, we experience the glory of forgiveness and new birth. But as we grow, God calls us to deeper realms — glory in sanctification, glory in service, glory in spiritual authority, and ultimately, glory in eternal union with Him.
This process is Spirit-led. As Romans 8:29 declares, “For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son.” God’s will is not merely for us to escape hell, but to be made like Jesus. That means we must allow the Holy Spirit to work within us, pruning, correcting, and refining us.
Transformation requires intimacy. Just like Moses, who experienced a glowing face after spending time with God on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:29-35), we are transformed by exposure to God’s presence. The more we commune with Him, the more His glory is reflected in our lives. We become more loving, more humble, more discerning, more powerful — not by striving, but by abiding.
But let us also remember that transformation often comes through trials. 2 Corinthians 4:17 reminds us, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” God uses difficulties to refine our character and deepen our reliance on Him. Pain, when surrendered to God, becomes a vehicle for greater glory.
Moreover, this journey from glory to glory calls for intentional surrender. We must die daily to self — our ambitions, ego, and sinful nature — and allow Christ to be formed in us (Galatians 2:20). The more we let go of ourselves, the more space Christ has to shine through us.
So beloved, press on. Do not settle for yesterday’s encounters. Seek more of Him, pursue deeper intimacy, yield to the Holy Spirit, and embrace the refining fire. For the path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day (Proverbs 4:18).
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.
Dear Father, we ask that you will infiltrate our hearts with a burning desire for Your Glory and that You continually transform our lives as we continue to gaze on your Glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
