Psalms 63:1-3
[1](A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah.) O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
[2]To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.
[3]Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
INTERPRETATION
There is a deep and holy desire within every true believer — a longing that cannot be satisfied with mere religious activity or earthly success. It is the yearning for the glory of God. This desire, though often misunderstood, is one of the purest expressions of a heart that has encountered Christ and longs to know Him more.
In Exodus 33:18, Moses, despite already experiencing miracles, divine encounters, and the presence of God in many forms, cried out, “Please, show me Your glory.” This plea came after receiving the commandments and leading the people of Israel. It was not about power, prosperity, or position. It was a yearning to see and experience the essence of who God is — His presence, His character, His beauty, and His majesty.
To yearn for the glory of God is to hunger for more than just blessings. It is to desire intimacy with the Father and to be consumed by His holiness. David expressed a similar desire in Psalm 63:1: “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.” This was not a casual desire; it was desperation. It was the heart-cry of a man after God’s own heart.
The glory of God is the manifestation of His presence. In the Old Testament, it was seen as a cloud or fire (Exodus 40:34-35), but in the New Covenant, it is revealed through Jesus Christ. John 1:14 declares, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” Now, through Christ, we have access to this glory, not just to witness it from a distance but to partake in it and reflect it.
Paul echoes this in 2 Corinthians 3:18: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory…” As we behold God in prayer, worship, and His Word, we are transformed. This is the ultimate goal — not just to feel good or be blessed, but to be changed into His likeness.
However, this kind of yearning demands a laying down of self. God’s glory is weighty (Hebrew: “kabod”) and cannot rest upon a divided or carnal heart. Romans 8:18 reveals, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” True yearning persists even through hardship, trusting that the pursuit of God’s glory is worth every sacrifice.
Yearning for the glory of God is not emotionalism. It is a spiritual appetite that draws us deeper into the heart of the Father. It leads to transformation, holiness, and revival. May this hunger consume us until we are fully satisfied in Him.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.
Dear Father, we ask that you will consume our hearts with a deep desire for You and that You continually transform our lives as we continue to gaze on your Glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
