WEEKLY BIBLE READING:
Romans 4:16-20
Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not. Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God.
INTERPRETATION
The Christian journey is one of faith, hope, and steadfast belief in the promises of God. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture is replete with accounts of God’s promises and the faith journeys of those who held on to them. As believers, we are called to walk this same path, trusting in the One who is faithful to fulfill every word He has spoken.
The journey begins with receiving God’s promises. To receive means to hear, believe, and embrace what God has said. His promises are found in His Word and often revealed to us through His Spirit. These promises serve as anchors for our souls, guiding us through life’s uncertainties.
Consider Abraham, the father of faith. God promised him, “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you” (Genesis 12:2). This promise was given when Abraham was childless and advanced in years. Yet, Abraham believed. Romans 4:20-21 reminds us that Abraham “did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”
Receiving God’s promises requires an open heart and a firm trust in His character. Hebrews 11:6 declares that “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
Receiving the promise is only the beginning. The journey of faith requires perseverance. God’s promises often involve a process—a journey of growth, testing, and refinement.
The Israelites provide a profound example. God promised them a land flowing with milk and honey, yet their journey from Egypt to Canaan was marked by trials, delays, and battles. Along the way, they faced moments of doubt and disobedience, but God remained faithful to His promise. Joshua 21:45 beautifully concludes their story: “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled.” This reminds us that even when the journey is challenging, God’s promises are certain. Our role is to remain steadfast, trusting His timing and wisdom.
No matter where you are on your journey, God’s promises are sure. They are “Yes” and “Amen” in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Keep walking in faith, trusting that He will fulfill every word He has spoken. Let the promises of God fuel your perseverance, strengthen your resolve, and fill you with hope as you journey with Him.
PRAYER
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael.
Dear Father, we ask that you help us to fix our hearts on your Divine promises. This year, we receive grace to journey in faith with your words to us as we continually experience your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
