WEEK 36: (September 19 – September 25, 2021)

WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS:

John 4:34 (NIV)

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

INTERPRETATION

God is a God of orderliness and protocol. The creation story as recorded in the book of Genesis shows the sequential occurrence of events surrounding the things created by God. In the end, he made man lord overall, giving him authority to exercise the dominion mandate. As believers, we are purposefully fashioned out to exhibit God’s planned ways for us. God has already planned the way that is best for us but we have infallible information about his priorities that will help us follow his plan.

The scriptural reading under review points to the significance of placing the will of God above any other interest. In the verses before verse 34, Jesus just concluded a conversation with a Samaritan woman while the disciples were away. So when Jesus said his food is to do the will of him who sent him, it simply means he has no other priority than to complete the task ahead of him. In a spiritual context, the “food” of our spirit is the will of God. As humans, weariness and fatigue are inevitable; however, the “food” is meant to give us the required energy to forge ahead.

Christ was sent to redeem mankind from sin – this is his ultimate assignment and purpose on earth. Jesus was tired too at a point but he summoned his inner man to take control at that moment and handed over everything to God, emphasizing that his will only should be fulfilled. If we are created for a purpose and that purpose is the will of God, then it makes sense that we feel best when we are accomplishing that purpose.

What then is the Father’s Will for us? The Word of God remains the blueprint for our life and God specifically mentions about six things in his Word that are part of his will for our lives. God’s first priority is to glorify himself through man’s deliverance from the condemnation of sin. Second, we must willingly yield ourselves to his control, living a Spirit-filled life; third, pursuing a holy life by abstaining from sexual immorality. Fourth, an attitude for gratitude as stated in the scripture “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. Fifth, submission to appropriate authorities and being a “socially responsible citizen”.

Finally, the book of Micah 6:8 laid out some of the expectations God requires of us: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly[a] with your God”

PRAYER

Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael, thank you for your word, thank you for your redemption. We ask for your mercy, may your mercy be sufficient for us. We pray this day you renew your spirit within us, and help us to do your will. We submit ourselves to your authority, strengthen our spirit to follow you till the end. May the troubles of this world never take us away from your presence. This and many more we ask for through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Thank you and God bless. Shalom.
